— Washington Irving (1809, by John Wesley Jarvis; Public Domain)
Washington Irving was a prolific writer, and one of the first American authors to gain notoriety in Europe; he was admired by the likes of Lord Byron, Charles Dickens, and Mary Shelley. His works include Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Most notably, he would continue his writing through bouts of great turmoil and personal tragedy.
